Spooktacular Safety: Tips for a Fun and Safe Halloween!
Halloween holds a special place in my heart. Not only is it one of my favorite holidays, but it’s also my sister's birthday! I’ll never forget when I was five years old, out trick-or-treating, and suddenly, my mom’s water broke. We had to rush home so she could head to the hospital and welcome my sister into the world. I was beyond excited, and to my 5-year-old self, she was like a real-life doll. From that moment on, she brought even more joy to Halloween, and I can’t deny the extra candy we would get, making it extra special.
In our house, Halloween is a big deal, but so is safety. That’s why I wanted to write this blog post to share some tips on how to make Halloween fun while keeping it safe!
Costume Safety
It’s important that costumes are not only fun but safe too! If your child’s costume includes a mask, make sure they can see where they’re going. If visibility is an issue, either adjust the mask, switch to face paint, or remove it altogether. And remember, costumes shouldn’t be too long or bulky to avoid tripping hazards. I have to say, costumes have come a long way from when I was a kid. Back then, they were uncomfortable plastic masks with tiny eye holes, and made you sound like Darth Vader with every breath, and don’t get me started on the plastic outfits, one wrong move, and they’d rip like an overstuffed trash bag! Thankfully, today’s costumes are much more creative and safer!
Street Safety
Street safety is non-negotiable in our house. I always remind my kids that pedestrians will never win against a car, it’s safety first! Be sure to cross streets carefully and make yourselves as visible as possible. Use glow sticks, carry flashlights, or wear light-up accessories. There are even fun options like light-up toques or scarves that make it easy for drivers to see you in the dark. With distracted driving, we all need to do our part to keep everyone safe.
Candy Safety
Before my kids dive into their Halloween haul, we always check their candy, partly for the “parent tax” (yes, we indulge in some candy!), but also to make sure everything is safe to eat. We look for any expired or tampered-with candy before letting them dig in.
General Safety Tips
Always stay in groups. If you have older kids, agree on a set time for them to be home. For younger children, make sure an adult is always supervising them. Communication is key. Check in with one another and, most importantly, have fun!
